Overview

This page is a county-by-county, city-by-city count of Residential Care Facility for the Elderly (RCFE) records with status LICENSED — what most families call assisted living, board-and-care, or memory care — in Sacramento and Placer counties. Every number below comes from the California Department of Social Services’ own licensing records. State license file snapshot: October 3, 2026 (retrieved October 3, 2026) — see the Method and source section for the full citation.

An RCFE license is the same license whether a home has 200 beds or 6. Most of the homes in this census are the smaller kind.

County at a glance

facility_capacity is licensed capacity (beds allowed), not occupancy or availability. Rows of facility type RCFE-CONTINUING CARE RETIREMENT COMMUNITY are included in the counts as the source lists them.

Pending and on-probation license records

Sacramento: 63 records with status PENDING; 9 licenses on probation (separate status, not in the LICENSED count).

Placer: 26 records with status PENDING; 0 licenses on probation (separate status, not in the LICENSED count).

Records with status PENDING and licenses on probation are not included in the licensed totals above — they are separate, disjoint statuses in the state file.

Why this matters

In our experience, families searching online tend to find the large, well-marketed communities first. The smaller, 1–6-bed homes that make up most of the local licensed supply are easy to miss on national directory sites, even though they are licensed the same way and are often the better fit for a specific care need or budget. That is our own observation from working in this market, not a statistic from the state data above.

The licence point is not an opinion, though: among homes licensed as RCFEs, “assisted living” and “board and care” are the same licence type, and what actually differs between them is size.

For what these homes cost and the ways families pay, see how to pay for assisted living in California.

A city is the facility’s mailing-address city exactly as recorded by the state. A few records carry a mailing-address city commonly associated with a different county than the state file’s own recorded county assignment for that row (see Method and source) — this may reflect a data-entry inconsistency in the source file rather than the facility’s actual location — and are kept exactly as recorded, so the same city can appear in both tables above with different counts.

Verify a license yourself

You can look up any specific home’s current license status directly with the state at the CDSS Community Care Licensing facility search. If the record is hard to read, our guide to reading a California care home license record explains each field, what the four statuses mean, and why licensed capacity is not the same as an available room.

How to use this

Use the city tables above to see roughly how many licensed options exist near you and how large they tend to be. If you would rather not search and compare on your own, we can match you to homes in this same licensed supply based on your family’s needs and budget. If you are weighing whether to search on your own or use a placement service, see how senior placement services work.

  • License: No license asserted: no license statement accompanies the live CCLD transparency API responses
  • State license file snapshot: October 3, 2026 (retrieved October 3, 2026)
  • Retrieved: October 3, 2026
  • File date (as recorded by the state): 10032026
  • State license file snapshot date: October 3, 2026
  • Filter applied: county_name in (SACRAMENTO, PLACER); counts use records whose raw facility_status is LICENSED or LICENSED/PENDING INCREASE, both normalized to LICENSED
  • City semantics: city is the facility's mailing-address city exactly as recorded in the state file. A few rows record a mailing-address city commonly associated with a different county than the state file's own county_name field for that row (its recorded county assignment) — for example Auburn, Roseville and Tracy appear under Sacramento's recorded county assignment. This may reflect a data-entry inconsistency in the source file rather than the facility's actual location, and each row is kept exactly as the state file recorded it rather than corrected or re-assigned.
  • City alias note: 1 city spelling(s) recorded in the state file were folded into the correct city for display (see city_aliases_applied); the raw CSV is unchanged.

Licensing counts change over time as homes open, close, or change status. These numbers reflect the dated state license file snapshot above, not real-time licensing status, and will be refreshed periodically.
